Dust safety and filter classes

What does dust safety mean?

The main safety concerns in regards to emissions at work places can be categorized into three main areas:

1. Risk of explosions
2. Risk of fires
3. Concentration of harmful dust in the air

For all three categories operators have to study local and international work safety regulations and in addition to that set up their own rules in order to protect workers from harmful substances in the air and on surfaces at their workplaces. Therefore it is very important to give full information about the suction media, application, operation environment and regulations to the supplier of a dust collection system. Equipment specification will vary widely (and of course so does the cost of the equipment) depending on these inquiry information.

Making mistakes at this stage can be very costly later or even lead to serious accidents.

Some important dust safety features of dust collection machines are :

1.The filter class ( l , M or H ), whereby the filter should carry a DIN certificate and such certificate should be visible on the outside of the machine.

See here the definition of filter classes:

Degree of permeability <0.5% (dust class L)
Degree of permeability <0.1% (dust class M)
Degree of permeability <0.005% (dust class H )

2. The ATEX class, which must be shown on the machine body as well.

3. Electrical specification such as IP class, conductivity, Temperature rating etc.

4. Additional measures such as conductive filters, temperature control, differential pressure control, automatic filter cleaning and dust bin filling level control.
